David Tsoka

Biography

David Tsoka, born in 1992 and residing in Kwa-Thema, Springs, completed his Matric at Phulong Secondary School in 2010. Subsequently, he commenced his training at APS in 2011. During his third year in 2013, he had the privilege to collaborate on a Kentridge lino-carving project. Additionally, he worked as an intern at Artist Proof Studio in the Pro shop, assuming the role of a print technician for a year. Presently, David is dedicated to pursuing a career in art with a primary focus on painting.

 

Artist Statement

David Tsoka’s art is deeply rooted in his lifelong curiosity about the world around him. From a young age, he began collecting objects, a habit that sparked his fascination with the mysteries of life and fueled his creative journey. His work is a reflection of this early fascination, combining found and collected items with intricate visual explorations of both mechanical and organic forms.

Tsoka’s artistic process often involves looking closely at the internal mechanisms of objects and the natural world, blending the mechanical with the organic to create a narrative of interconnectedness. By using these close-ups, he seeks to illustrate the profound link between his thoughts and the reality that surrounds him. His work transcends simple representation, diving into the complex layers of perception and existence, inviting viewers to explore the hidden connections in everyday life.

Tsoka brings these ideas to life with vibrant colors and intricate patterns. His use of shape and texture reflects the harmony between the mechanical and natural worlds, highlighting the beauty in the details that are often overlooked. The result is a body of work that is both visually engaging and deeply thought-provoking, encouraging viewers to reconsider how they see and engage with their surroundings.
