I use my body as a symbol to explore different parts of my identity as an African woman. The works reflect an introspective self-awareness of my body as a mother and African woman. The works depict the insecurities and challenges I went through after giving birth to my son. My body did not conform and I lost confidence and did not feel comfortable in my own body anymore. The shells in my works are a metaphor of a home, and a protective body.

Shells are perceived as being feminine objects and in my work, the hard exterior of the shell is embossed into the paper and has become soft. At times they are etched deeply and printed darkly in contrast to the soft pastel shades. I have worked with soft pastel colours, which are symbolic and overtly feminine, to celebrate all women with authentic inward and outward beauty. In this series of prints I exposed and explored my body image and personal perceptions of self-worth. I am questioning the many roles the female body inhabits in my context.
