APS and Arts and Culture Trust Collaboration: Nurturing Emerging Artists in the Nyohola Mentorship Programme 2023
Artist Proof Studio is delighted to announce a fruitful partnership with the Arts and Culture Trust as part of our Education & Development initiatives. This collaboration took shape through the Nyohola Mentorship Programme 2023, a platform that offered five talented young artists an opportunity to explore printmaking.
The Nyohola Mentorship Programme 2023 unfolded through a series of engaging online sessions that brought together five finalists, guided by three ABSA Senior Graduates and two interns and facilitated by the APS Managing Director.
To enhance the hands-on experience, the Nyohola finalists had the unique opportunity to visit Artist Proof Studio on the 2nd and 3rd of October. Here, they were able to bring their artistic visions to life through the creation and printing of their artworks.
These artworks were exhibited at the MTN headquarters on the 5th of October. Learn more about the 5 finalists and their work HERE.
This project not only served as an important moment in the careers of the Nyohola finalists but also provided a platform for work placement training for APS Senior Graduates. The graduates took on the responsibility of coordinating, hosting, and ensuring that the participants achieved their objectives within just two days.
APS is immensely proud to have played a part in this transformative journey, offering a platform for young artists to hone their skills and express their unique voices. We look forward to more such partnerships that continue to inspire and elevate the world of printmaking.
Constitutional Court Competition Winners
The Constitutional Court Trust (CCT), custodian of the CCAC, announced the winners of its inaugural CCAC student competition on Saturday 7th September 2023. As a pilot programme, they hosted senior printmaking and photography students from Market Photo Workshop, Artist Proof Studio, Tshwane University of Technology, University of Johannesburg, University of Pretoria, Vaal University of Technology and University of Witwatersrand to participate in a closed competition ‘to create artworks that convey the sense of place of the Constitutional Court of South Africa’.
The CCT, in preparation for a traveling exhibition marking 30 years of democracy in South Africa in 2024, sought original photographs and print artworks inspired by the court's architectural magnificence, both inside and out, and its surrounding environment. These talented visual arts students were invited to document the court environment with creativity, ensuring the communication of the court's unique design. The competition also fosters youth engagement and representation within the CCAC.
The winners, Bheki Sibiya and Obakeng Masilo from Artist Proof Studio, have received well-deserved recognition for their outstanding contributions to this initiative. Their artworks will be produced in limited edition runs of up to 10 signed and numbered editions. Two of these will be displayed in the CCAC, one will go to their respective higher education institutions, and two more will be designated for a fundraising auction to support the CCAC endowment fund through the Foundation for Society, Law, and Art in South Africa.
The winning artists will receive financial support of R5,000 to cover the production costs for these editions, while they retain the option to independently produce the remaining five editions. This recognition not only celebrates their artistic talent but also their invaluable contribution to commemorating 30 years of democracy in South Africa through their exceptional creations. Congratulations to these talented artists, as well as to the other selected winners who have made a significant mark in this competition.
