Collection: Gugulethu Mnguni

My work explores the relationship with my father. This body of work is titled “2009” - a year that was traumatic and life-changing for me. I was involved in a horrific car accident and suffered the loss of my father in the same year. The figures represented in my work have distorted legs. The accident made me aware of a resulting distortion in my own legs as they were injury. Objects that remind me of my father such as mechanical tools and furniture are represented throughout the body of work. These objects honour my day as they are the only physical remnants of him. I also use flowers and floral pattern to contrast the more masculine objects. In a way the flowers come to represent me and there is a moment where my father and I can co-exist in an imagined space.
