Biography

Thandiwe Khumalo was born on the January 1989 in the east side of Johannesburg in the township called Thokoza, she then matriculated, she always had passion for the arts from high school, after high school she went to study printmaking at the Artist Proof Studio where she got the opportunity to collaborate in an exhibition in 2015 from ABSA together with the Artist Proof Studio and she graduated in 2016. 2018 she got a residency to go to Italy, she had greatest experiences in past years and 2017 she has been an assistant printmaker in pro shop at Artist Proof. In 2021 she got an opportunity to work at LL Edition as an assistant printmaker and now she currently at wits university working as an assistant printmaker/studio operator.  

Artist Statement 

My artwork reflects my childhood memories and emotions, as well as the experiences I have encountered throughout my life's journey. I explore the concept of vulnerability and survival, using lithography and drawing to bring forth memories associated with relationships, love, dependency, connection, understanding, forgiveness, identity, and strength. These images depict an inner struggle, where I explore the desire to find a balance between the reality of these experiences and the idealized versions, we wish they could have been. Through my art, I aim to capture the essence of these emotions and memories in a way that is both revealing and relatable to the viewer
