In 2023, Artist Proof Studio collaborated with the Arts and Culture Trust (ACT) Nyoloha Scholarship Programme to host a successful two-day training workshop for finalists in the Visual and Digital Arts categories. The workshop introduced these talented young artists to the world of printmaking, allowing them to explore new mediums and techniques while incorporating their existing practices. This initiative aimed to broaden their artistic scope, enabling them to apply printmaking to their current works and integrate these pieces into their final exhibition collection. The hands-on sessions were coupled with remote classes, providing a solid foundation in printmaking techniques, the role of print in contemporary art, and its potential as a medium for storytelling.
Artist Proof Studio had the pleasure of collaborating with the Nyoloha Scholarship Programme once again this year to offer a unique printmaking experience for the programme's visual art finalists. This year’s theme, #NyolohaAfrica: Our canvas, our voice, our future, encouraged participants to reimagine South Africa's artistic future by blending traditional African storytelling with modern technology. The workshops, led by APS graduates Misa Boshoma, Tsako Hobyani Khumo Ramaila, and facilitated by Nico Ras and Ben Mpande, provided the finalists with hands-on printmaking skills and techniques. The printmaking workshops were organised by Heidi Mielke, ensuring a seamless and educational experience for all participants. Throughout the workshops, the finalists explored the intricacies of printmaking, and their growth and dedication were evident in their final works.
Tsako Hobyani shared his experience of mentoring Bonolo Nyatshane, through the process of creating her artwork using the silkscreen technique. He said, "From the outset, Bonolo was eager to learn and engage with the process, which made the journey exciting. Her openness to feedback and enthusiasm for experimenting with different textures and patterns were truly inspiring, and it made guiding her through the process a pleasure."
The 15 finalists in the Nyoloha Scholarship Programme were competing for two fully funded scholarships, each valued at R300 000, to study towards an arts degree at a South African arts institution of their choice. The programme wrapped up with a celebratory performance, blending the visual arts and performance arts into a powerful expression of creativity and talent.
The scholarship for the Digital/Visual Arts category was awarded to Bonolo Nyatshane, from the North West with Kgabo Tauatsoala from Gauteng taking the Performing Arts scholarship award.
"Seeing Bonolo’s final artwork displayed at the exhibition was an incredibly proud moment. The dedication, creativity, and growth she demonstrated throughout the mentorship came to life in her work. When I heard her name announced, the room was filled with excitement, and I couldn’t help but feel immense pride for her achievement." Tsako Hobyani
The visual art finalists’ works are currently on display at MTN’s Head Offices in Fairland (Phase 2). Members of the public are invited to view the exhibition, which will run until the end of November 2024. Those interested in visiting the exhibition can arrange a viewing by contacting Niel niel.nortje@mtn.com
