Chapter 31: Foretelling – Tales of A Printmaker
It was an art filled weekend in Johannesburg at this year’s Turbine Art Fair! When we heard the news that Turbine Art Fair is going underground, there were moments of anticipation and excitement. The one thing that went through everyone’s mind at the studio was trying to visualize how the space, an underground parking lot, would be turned into an Art Fair.
This year’s theme was FRESH, BOLD, and EDGY, and they did not disappoint! In less than two weeks the space had been transformed for more than 20 exhibitors including galleries, Editions, Collectives and Projects spaces across the country to showcase amazing works. . Leading to the fair, we hosted a “Leaders in Printmaking Education” webinar featuring Bekezela Mabena, Hlavutelo Ngobeni and Lebohang Motaung on their journey being APS students to becoming practicing artists. The discussion was led by Nathi Simelane, Reneilwe Mathibe and Tracey Munungufhala.
Turbine Art Fair is well known for introducing the hottest, young and up-coming artists to the art market. Our selection of invited artists included collaborative artists, top APS graduates making their mark in the local art scene, as well as top emerging and established APS alumni who’ve become the go-to artists for private and prominent collectors locally and internationally.
The artists we featured this year included: Abe Mathabe, Bekezela Mabena, Bokang Mankoe, Jan Tshikhuthula, Lebohang Motaung, Nadine Mathenjwa, Nkosana Nhlapo, Raymond Fuyana, Reneilwe Mathibe, Sifiso Temba and Sizwe Khoza. To view our TAF online collection please Click Here.
