Collection: Samukelo Gqola

My work focuses on migration. I talk about the different stages and challenges I have been through within migration. I also talk about my Xhosa culture. I use birds, mountains, patterns, fens, suitcases, landscapes, animals, figures, silhouettes, portraits and also old objects to create my art works. The bird is the metaphor that represents me. I choose to use a Hawk because it is part of my clan name. With my work I am hoping to represent my village and motivate young children from different backgrounds who have drawing skills. Children who are talented in art but are not aware of the gift they possess and what it could do for them. I want my work to encourage those kids to the point where they can realise that art can change their lives. I am also hoping to make Black people sustain their culture and be proud of it in order for it to be passed on to the next generation.
