Collection: Vonani Hlungwani

I’m interested and inspired by my background and telling stories about my mother. I found it very difficult to accept her death and miss her presence in my space. It was a privilege to be raised by my mother, she taught me humanity. She was never perfect but I learned through her hard work, humanity, and generous way of communicating with people to be an open and giving person.
In my work, I portray memories and the bond I had with my mother. The connection was extremely powerful. Love and peace were really in my home. My mother prepared me well to face the world and she took a whole lot of space in my heart system. It was hard growing up in a rural area of Limpopo. I use birds in my work as symbols of angels and her presence. My work is a living legacy to my mother’s influence on my life as a young man.
