Creative Collaboration Through Printmaking: APS x UJ x Vilnius Academy of Arts

In March 2024, Artist Proof Studio welcomed a dynamic and imaginative learning exchange, hosting Lithuanian artist and educator Professor Marija Marcelionytė-Paliukė for a two-week workshop in collaboration with the University of Johannesburg (UJ). Funded by the Erasmus+ Programme, this residency brought together third-year students from APS and the University of Johannesburg for two weeks, combining drawing and printmaking in a way that encouraged experimentation, freedom, and connection.

The workshop began with three days of drawing exercises that challenged students to let go of their habits and expectations. Using a simple set of tools, paper, charcoal, ink, and graphite. Students worked with “activators” to disrupt their routines and access new ideas. From drawing while lying down to mirroring their classmate’s movements, each prompt invited spontaneity and laughter while unlocking unexpected compositions. Marija’s method created an open, playful atmosphere where students from APS and UJ connected deeply over their shared creative processes.

In the second week, the focus shifted to printmaking. Students developed compositions from their drawing workshop into intaglio prints using tempera on offset plates. Guided by Marija’s expertise, they explored layering, colour mixing, and transferring their sketches into refined prints.

This workshop was especially meaningful as it marked the first time UJ students had worked in the APS studio. The collaboration helped foster friendships and future partnerships, but it also reminded students of the joy of discovery and the power of community in creative learning. In a fast-paced world, Marija’s approach, slowing down, playing, experimenting, offered a refreshing and meaningful way to reconnect with the core of artistic practice.

We are grateful to Professor Kim Berman for initiating and leading this collaboration, and to Professor Federico Freschi, Dean of the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture at UJ, for his role in bringing Marija to Johannesburg. Special thanks to the APS team, Ilse Pienaar, Jaco Van Der Heever, Heidi Mielke, Nico Ras, and Lucas Nkgweng for their support throughout the exchange. And of course, to Marija, for her openness and generosity.

Most of all, we’re proud of our students, who embraced every challenge with energy and curiosity, reminding us why collaborative learning remains at the heart of what we do.
